New Crop of Calves
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This isn't the best picture but we wanted you to see our calves, the future of GrassRoots Meats. They are on lush pastures in Oklahoma and next summer we will bring them to Colorado to finish on the high mountain grasses here in Pagosa Springs.
They are the best crop of calves we have ever had. Allan is very excited to see his breeding program coming together. Once you buy a bull and place him with the cows it is nearly a year before the calves are born and two more years before they are ready to process. Choosing the right bull and cows is so important because with so much time invested the program is not easily changed. We are very relieved and very excited that our calves look so good and that the future appears so bright.
Allan's Dad
Thank you all so much for your kind words and your prayers for Allan's dad. We had to spend a little more time in Houston than we planned but it was well worth it to be with the family. All but one member of his family was able to be there, including grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is undergoing chemotherapy and is having many transfusions and bone marrow tests. Only 52 other people have ever received this treatment, but the good news is that he seems to be responding and it appears to be working. The progress is slow, but positive, and we are all very happy. Every day we are alive is a blessing from God and a new opportunity to be all that He has called us to be.
Fast Food Nation
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I read "Fast Food Nation," by Eric Schlosser, while we were on our trip. While it was definitely politically slanted and presented a very one-sided view, I could not help but find myself cheering with the things that he exposed about the cattle industry as well as the fast food industry. If you haven't read it, it is another book that I highly recommend.

From the business point of view I found the history of the fast food business fascinating. From a personal point of view I found the story of the meat processing plants alarming and depressing. Made me appreciate our processor so much and I am determined to let him know how important he is to our business every way that I can. You can be assured that none of the horrors that go on in the large processing plants happen with our processor. He is a good guy and runs a good operation. It is a three generation family business and they treat their employees well.

New Info on Website

As I have said before, when I read these books I begin to understand why so many of you ask the questions that you do. I also have a better idea how to answer those questions.

Last month I decided to add some more information about us on our website - about why we are doing what we are doing. Corn being used for ethanol is changing the cattle industry and more and more folks are going to be trying to get into the grass-finished business as an opportunity to make money in a down market. We appreciate your loyalty and while we know that you will consider other suppliers to meet your needs we want you to know why we are in this and to assure you that when the others have converted back to the commodity system when the prices recover, we will still be here to service your needs. Check out about our story on the "Click Here to Find Out..." link on the home page of our website, or just click on the link below.

Once again I would like to thank you for all of your prayers for Allan's dad, as well as all of your support for our business. Many new customers came on line last month and we are happily looking at ways to expand our animal numbers so that we are sure to meet the demand both for this year and for years to come. We are grateful to all of you for the orders you place, and just for being the great folks that you are. Don't know what kind of folks our competitors have for customers but we feel we surely are getting the cream of the crop. Have a great 4th of July! God bless America. We are thankful to Him that He chose to put us in this place to do the work that we do. We pray that it honors Him.

Lois & Allan
