New Bred Heifers
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We are so excited to announce that we purchased 25 new Angus heifers, all bred with the perfect breeding to fit into our program. This is a huge step towards providing you with the inventory that we need to supply your needs in the future.
This has been a year of rapid growth for GrassRoots Meats. We have scrambled to be able to provide you with the meat you need, and to provide a year round supply. Next year should be SO much better, and with the purchase of these heifers 2009 looks great, and beyond that as well.
Just to let you know...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Laura Troyer wrote a wonderful article for Culinate Magazine about the health benefits of grass-fed beef. Laura contacted us this past year about another article she was writing and we spent a lot of time emailing back and forth. It was a great pleasure for me to help her with her work. In return it made me really think through what we are doing and why, and forced me to put my thoughts down in writing, which in turn helped me working with all of you and answering your questions.

Laura quotes me in the article - nothing brilliant, but flattering nonetheless! Click on the link below and read her article. It is short and simple, but to the point.

The Grass Is Greener

Mel's Meat Processing
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We get lots of questions about how we process the meat, and if the processing is humane. So I thought you might like to know a little about our processor.
We use a very small company in southern Colorado, about 110 miles from here. It is a three generation family run operation, and they work very hard to package the meat for you. We have worked through a lot of things this past year, but we are very grateful to have this family processing our meat for us. Meat processing is a very hard business and many processors go out of business every year. Sometimes 110 miles seems a long way to have to travel but we are just glad that Mel's does such a good job for us.
A Great Email
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I received an email the other day from Karen, in California, that I wanted to share with you. She expressed herself so well, and rather than share the info I wanted to pass on her email to you. Thanks to all of you for your encouragement.

"I too believe we need to take responsibility for our own health and the best way is what we are putting or NOT putting in our bodies! With my last two pregnancy's I became painfully aware of how delicate our bodies are. I had a pregnancy induced liver disease due to the increase of the hormone estrogen. I have great respect now about the power of hormones and the effects of chemicals, proteins, fats, etc...on our bodies. My youngest is four and it is just this last year that I don't get sick every month when my estrogen levels rise. Needless to say I am trying to clean out my family's bodies as well as our pantry of junk! You are correct to say that we are all in this together, the Internet has it's good points. It can make a small town (no I am not talking about Hillary's village) out of you and me even though we are miles apart. I believe as a country we need to get back to basics. Alright I have stepped off my soap box! God bless you and your husband for all you do."

New Program
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have been working on a auto-ship bimonthly box beef and lamb program that I would like to have your feedback on. Right now I am thinking that every other month you would receive in the beef box a variety of meats including roasts, stew meat, steaks, stewing bones, and burger - at least 28 pounds of meat. I am trying to keep the price around $175.00 to $185.00, including shipping, for our Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Arizona and Nevada customers. There would be a surcharge for customers outside the UPS Ground two day circle.
The lamb box would contain about 20 pounds of chops, stew meat, boneless leg roast, leg steaks, shanks, ground lamb, shoulder roast and stewing bones. The price would run the same as for the beef box. Please drop me an email and let me know if this is something you might be interested in. If I get enough feedback we will try to implement it this coming year.
Lower Shipping Costs
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have been negotiating with UPS for lower shipping costs. We just started the program last week, so we are working out the kinks but it looks like we should be able to reduce our shipping prices. I am hoping to offer a number of packages next year that include shipping, taking the guess work out of the total cost. In the meantime I am hoping that we will be even more competitive with our pricing than we already are.

Standing Rib Roasts
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Many of you have placed your orders for Standing Rib Roasts for Christmas, but just want to remind you that we need to get those orders in right away to insure that we can get you your roast in time. The price is $16.99 per pound, plus shipping. The roasts will run about 5 to 6 pounds each.
Is Christmas really just around the corner? We are getting ready for a (hopefully) very busy season at our retail gift store here in Pagosa Springs, the Made In Colorado Shoppe. We wear many hats, but it helps to keep us afloat as we build GrassRoots Meats. Hope you find enjoyment in your gift shopping and in the celebrations of the season. God bless you all.
